Acts of violence against journalists in Russia. A founder of the newspaper was shot dead when he founded the newspaper is conducting an investigation for corruption.
"Gadzhimurat Kamalov was shot when he left the news agency Chernovik in the capital of Dagestan province," said the Interior Ministry told Reuters on Friday (16/12/2011).
Police said Kamalov was shot eight times and was pronounced dead on the way to hospital. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), almost all journalists in Chernovik often threatened and persecuted because of frequent cases of corruption reported in the region.
"Murder Gadzhimurat Kamalov great loss to independent journalism in the North Caucasus. Russia's most dangerous places for journalists," said regional coordinator Nina Ognianova advocacy group.
Russian journalists who investigate corruption often face serious risks. Usually the threat comes in several provincial areas where local authorities tend not to actively investigate attacks against journalists.
Dagestan region is often plagued by violence. While in Russia itself, there are approximately 19 cases of killings of journalists who have not been solved until today.
